Riyadh to Madinah by Road: Distance, Drive Time and a Private Chauffeur Transfer
Riyadh to Madinah is about 840 kilometres by road, close to eight hours at the wheel and about ten to eleven hours door to door once fuel, prayer and meal stops are added. The route runs north west to Qassim and then west on the Qassim to Madinah road. A private chauffeur makes it a single comfortable day: collection from your door in Riyadh, steady pacing with proper breaks, and drop off at your hotel near the Prophet's Mosque. We run it one way, and intercity transfers are quoted per route.
For families, pilgrims and business travellers alike, the road between the capital and the city of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is one of the long journeys in the Kingdom that people genuinely choose to drive. Some want to arrive with the whole family together and every bag in the same vehicle. Some prefer the road when flights are full or schedules change. Some simply like the idea of leaving Riyadh after breakfast and praying Isha in the Prophet's Mosque the same evening.
This guide sets out the distance and the realistic drive time, how the route breaks into stages, how the road compares with flying, why we always run this corridor one way, which vehicle suits which party, how the price works and what to plan if your trip continues to Makkah for Umrah. If you want the bigger picture first, our guide to Saudi city distances and drive times sets every major corridor side by side.

The Route, Stage by Stage
The Ministry of Transport publishes the two halves of this journey separately: Riyadh to Qassim at 317 kilometres and Qassim to Madinah at 448 kilometres. Those are city to city figures. Measured from central Riyadh to the central area around the Haram, mapping services put the full drive at about 840 kilometres, and that is the number we plan around.
Riyadh to Qassim
The first stage runs north west out of the capital on the expressway towards Buraydah and Unaizah. It is a wide, fast and well serviced road, and for a morning departure it is usually the easiest part of the day. Many of our corporate clients know this corridor already as a same day business return, and our Riyadh to Qassim road guide covers it in detail. Qassim is also the natural place for the first proper break: fuel, coffee, a prayer and a chance for children and older passengers to walk.
Qassim to Madinah
The second stage turns west across open country towards Madinah. It is the longer half and the quieter one, with longer gaps between service areas, which is exactly why pacing matters. Our chauffeurs plan the fuel and prayer stops before the car leaves Riyadh rather than improvising them on the road, and they keep a steady speed rather than a fast one. In the hottest months the afternoon sun on this stretch is the most tiring part of the trip for passengers, so a morning departure is almost always the better choice.
Arriving in Madinah
The final kilometres bring you into the city on its ring roads and towards the central area around the Prophet's Mosque. Hotels close to the Haram often have set drop off points and busy forecourts near prayer times, so your chauffeur will confirm the exact entrance with the hotel in advance. If you are flying out of Madinah later in your stay, our guide to Madinah airport and the Haram covers that short leg.
Road, Air or Rail
Flying is faster in the air, roughly an hour and a half, but the full journey also includes getting to the airport, checking in, waiting, collecting bags and the transfer at the other end. For a solo business traveller with hand luggage, flying usually wins when schedules are running normally. For a family of five with suitcases, a wheelchair or a large group travelling together, the road is often the calmer option, because everyone stays in one vehicle from door to door and nothing is checked in. Whichever you choose, check the latest schedule with your airline before you decide.
There is no direct passenger train between Riyadh and Madinah. Rail from Riyadh runs north towards Qassim and beyond, and the Haramain line links Madinah with Jeddah and Makkah, so rail between these two cities is not a practical door to door option.
Why We Treat This as a One Way Journey
Our full day service is twelve hours. A one way drive of ten to eleven hours fits inside that day with room for stops. A same day return does not, because it would put one chauffeur at the wheel for well over sixteen hours, and we will not run it at any price. The same rule applies to our Jeddah to Riyadh road journey.
When a client needs to come back, there are three structures that work. The first is a one way transfer each way on separate days, with the chauffeur resting in Madinah or returning empty. The second is a multi day booking in which the same chauffeur and vehicle stay with you in Madinah for ziyarat and then drive you home. The third suits elderly travellers or anyone who would rather not spend a full day in the car: split the drive with an overnight in Qassim and arrive in Madinah fresh the next morning.
Choosing the Right Vehicle
| Party | Vehicle we would suggest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 business travellers | Mercedes S Class or BMW 7 Series | Quiet cabin, space to work and rest over eight hours |
| Couple or small family | Lexus ES or GMC Yukon | Comfortable seats and room for suitcases |
| Family of 5 to 7 with luggage | GMC Yukon or Mercedes V Class | Space for every bag and a calmer ride for older passengers |
| Extended family or small group | Hyundai Staria, Hyundai H1 or Mercedes Sprinter | Everyone together in one vehicle |
| Group of 12 to 21 | Toyota Hiace or Toyota Coaster | Group seating with luggage space |
| Tour groups | 34 seat VIP coach or 47 seat coach | One vehicle for the whole group |
On a journey this long, a size up is rarely wasted. The extra legroom and luggage space make a real difference by the second half of the day. You can see every vehicle on our fleet page, and our group transport service covers larger parties.
What the Journey Costs
Intercity journeys are quoted per route, and Riyadh to Madinah is no exception. The price depends on the vehicle, the number of passengers and bags, the departure time, whether you want an overnight stop and whether the chauffeur stays with you in Madinah or returns. Send us the pickup point in Riyadh, the hotel in Madinah, the date and the size of your party, and we will confirm a fixed price in writing before you travel.
Many travellers also need a car in Riyadh before they leave, for meetings, family visits or errands. For that, our published Riyadh full day rates apply. Each covers twelve hours with a chauffeur inside the city:

|---|---|
| Toyota Fortuner or similar | 1,150 |
| Ford Taurus or similar | 1,380 |
| Lexus ES or similar | 1,495 |
| Hyundai H1 | 1,610 |
| GMC Yukon or similar | 1,725 |
| Toyota Hiace | 1,725 |
| Hyundai Staria | 1,840 |

Every published figure is on our pricing page. Our full day chauffeur service explains what a day includes, and companies moving staff or guests between the two cities can arrange it through our corporate transport service. For everything we do in the capital, see our Riyadh chauffeur service page.
Travelling for Umrah or Ziyarat
Travelling from Riyadh to Madinah does not require ihram, because the visit to Madinah is not part of the rites of Umrah. If your trip continues from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah, the miqat on that road is Dhul Hulaifah, close to Madinah, and your chauffeur can plan the stop there. Our Makkah to Madinah road guide covers the long leg between the two holy cities.
Once you are in Madinah, keeping the same chauffeur for a day of visits is often easier than booking separate rides. Our ziyarat planning guide lists the places most visitors include, and our Madinah chauffeur service page explains how we work in the city. If you are travelling with older parents, our guide to Umrah with elderly parents has practical advice on pacing and vehicle choice.
Planning Tips for the Drive
Leave early. A departure soon after Fajr or after breakfast puts most of the driving in the cooler hours and gets you to Madinah before the evening rush near the Haram. Tell us the number of large bags and any wheelchair or child seat needs in advance, because they decide the vehicle. Pack water, snacks and anything you need for prayer in the cabin rather than the luggage area. Keep your phone switched on so the chauffeur can confirm the drop off point with you as you approach the hotel. And if anyone in your party tires easily, ask about the overnight in Qassim rather than pushing through.

Frequently Asked Questions

About 840 kilometres between the two city centres on a typical mapping route. The Ministry of Transport publishes the two halves separately as Riyadh to Qassim at 317 kilometres and Qassim to Madinah at 448 kilometres.
How long does the drive from Riyadh to Madinah take?
Close to eight hours of driving, and about ten to eleven hours door to door once fuel, prayer and meal stops are included. Departure time, season and the traffic around the Haram on arrival all affect the total.
Is there a train from Riyadh to Madinah?
No. There is no direct passenger train between the two cities. Rail from Riyadh runs north towards Qassim, and the Haramain line links Madinah with Jeddah and Makkah, so the practical choices are flying or driving.
Can I go from Riyadh to Madinah and back in one day?
Not with us. The round trip would mean more than sixteen hours at the wheel, which is unsafe for the driver and exhausting for passengers. We run the journey one way, or as a multi day booking with the chauffeur staying in Madinah, or split with an overnight in Qassim.
How much is a private transfer from Riyadh to Madinah?
Intercity transfers are quoted per route. Send us the pickup point, the hotel, the date and the number of passengers and bags, and we will confirm a fixed price in writing before you travel.
Do I need ihram when travelling from Riyadh to Madinah?
No. Visiting Madinah is not part of Umrah, so no ihram is needed for this journey. If you continue from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah, you enter ihram at Dhul Hulaifah, and your chauffeur can stop there for you.
