Umrah & Ziyarat Transport from the GCC: Complete Guide

Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to Mecca and Madina from elsewhere in the Gulf. From Kuwait City, Manama, Dubai, Doha and Muscat the flight into Jeddah is short, often under three hours. The flight is the easy part.

What decides whether an Umrah trip feels calm or chaotic is the ninety minutes after you clear passport control at JED, and how you handle the 420 kilometres between Mecca and Madina. Get the ground transport right and the whole journey settles. Get it wrong and you spend the first evening of a spiritual trip negotiating a fare on a kerb with tired children and four suitcases.

This guide covers what pilgrims travelling from the GCC actually need to know: the airports, the routes, the real rates, the Ziyarat sites, and the questions people are too polite to ask.

Which Airport You Should Fly Into

There are two, and choosing correctly saves several hours.

• King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), Jeddah. The gateway for Mecca. Its Hajj and Umrah terminal exists specifically for pilgrim traffic. Jeddah to Mecca is roughly 90 kilometres, usually a little over an hour by road. Almost every GCC carrier flies here.
• Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport (MED), Madina. The gateway for Madina and Masjid an-Nabawi, around 15 kilometres from the mosque. If your itinerary starts in Madina, flying into MED and out of JED, or the reverse, avoids doubling back.

The common pattern for pilgrims from the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman is to fly into JED, perform Umrah first, travel up to Madina by road, then fly home from MED. It is worth booking your ground transport in that shape rather than as three unconnected trips.

Airport Pickup at JED: What Actually Happens

A pilgrim arrival is not a normal arrival. You are likely to be in ihram, you may have travelled overnight, you are probably with family, and you have more luggage than a business traveller. Zamzam water and gifts mean you often come back heavier than you went.

With a booked transfer, the chauffeur is inside the arrivals hall with a name board before your flight lands, because the booking is tracked against the flight number rather than the scheduled time. If the aircraft sits on the tarmac for forty minutes, the waiting time is included and the price does not change. Luggage is loaded for you. The vehicle is already cool.

The alternative is the kerbside negotiation, which costs less on a good day and considerably more on a bad one, with no guarantee about the vehicle, the driver or the final figure.

Rates: What Pilgrim Transport Costs in 2026

The card below is our published Jeddah and Dammam city rate card, which is what applies to JED airport pickups. All figures are in Saudi Riyals with VAT applicable on top. Mecca and Madina work, and the intercity journey between the two holy cities, is quoted per route rather than per city, because distance rather than the clock drives the price. Ask and you will be given the figure in writing before you book.

For a family of four or five with luggage, the Fortuner-class SUV at SAR 210 is the sensible booking and also the cheapest line on the card. For an extended family of eleven, the Hyundai H1 at SAR 690 works out at SAR 63 per person. Groups of twenty-one travel in a Toyota Coaster at SAR 920, which is SAR 44 each. Mecca: Getting To and Around the Haram

The 90-kilometre run from Jeddah to Mecca is straightforward on the highway, and the complication is at the end of it rather than along the way. Traffic within the Haram district is restricted, controlled and unforgiving during peak Umrah periods, particularly the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Two practical points. First, drivers who work Mecca need to know the current drop-off points, which change with construction and crowd management around Masjid al-Haram; a driver who works the city daily knows where a vehicle can actually stop this month. Second, all Roark chauffeurs assigned to Mecca are Muslim and hold the permits required to enter the Haram area. Non-Muslims cannot legally enter Mecca, and this includes drivers, which is a genuine operational constraint rather than a detail of policy. If a company cannot confirm this, it cannot take you to the Haram.

Mecca to Madina: The Intercity Leg

Roughly 420 kilometres, four to five hours by road depending on stops. Most pilgrims make this journey once, in one direction, and it is the leg most often booked badly.

The advantage of a private vehicle over a shared coach is not comfort for its own sake. It is that you leave when you are ready rather than when the coach fills, you stop when someone needs to stop, and your luggage travels with you rather than being loaded and unloaded at a depot. For an older traveller or a family with small children, that difference is the whole journey. The Haramain High Speed Railway is a genuinely good alternative for this leg and we will say so; where a car wins is door to door with luggage, and when your timing does not match the train.

Because this is a distance-based route rather than city service, it is quoted per journey. Ask when you book and the number comes in writing.

Ziyarat: What a Full Day Actually Covers

Ziyarat is best booked as full-day hire rather than as separate transfers, because the whole point is to move at your own pace with the car waiting. A twelve-hour day starts from SAR 1,380 for a Fortuner-class SUV, with unlimited stops and waiting time included.

In Madina, a standard Ziyarat day covers Masjid an-Nabawi, Masjid Quba, the site of the Battle of Uhud and Mount Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and the Seven Mosques area, and the date farms on the edge of the city. That is comfortably a full day with time to pray without watching a clock.

In Mecca, the sites usually include Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira from the viewing area, Jabal Thawr, the plains of Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina, and Masjid Aisha at Tan'eem, which is where pilgrims commonly re-enter ihram for an additional Umrah.

Booking from Your Home Country

Every arrangement above can be confirmed before you leave Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar or Oman. You do not need a Saudi SIM card or a Saudi bank account. Can I book Umrah transport from Kuwait, Bahrain or the UAE before I fly?

Can non-Muslim drivers enter Mecca?

No. Entry to Mecca is restricted to Muslims, and that restriction applies to drivers exactly as it applies to passengers. Every Roark chauffeur assigned to Mecca work is Muslim and holds the permits required for the Haram area. If you are travelling with a non-Muslim colleague, they cannot enter the city, and the practical arrangement is to base them in Jeddah.

Do I need a chauffeur for Umrah, or is a taxi enough?

For a single hop between a Mecca hotel and the Haram, a taxi is fine. A private chauffeur earns its cost on three things: the airport arrival with luggage and family, the intercity leg to Madina, and Ziyarat days with multiple stops. If your trip is only a hotel and the Haram, book transfers and skip the full-day hire.

How long does the Mecca to Madina journey take?

Around four to five hours by road for the 420 kilometres, including a stop. Departure time is yours to choose with a private vehicle. Many families travel after Fajr to arrive in Madina before the heat, and older travellers often prefer to break the drive once, which a private booking allows and a shared coach does not.

Can a woman travel alone with a chauffeur in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Women book and travel with professional chauffeurs across the Kingdom without restriction, and it is common.
