Jeddah to AlUla by Road: Distance, Drive Time, the Madinah Overnight and What It Costs
Jeddah to AlUla by road runs north through Madinah: about 410 kilometres to Madinah on the published highway figure, then roughly 300 to 380 kilometres on to AlUla depending on the route. That is about 710 to 790 kilometres and eight to nine hours of driving, so it is a one way day or a two day trip with a night in Madinah, never a same day return. Jeddah full day rates start at SAR 1,380. Intercity is quoted per route.
AlUla is the trip that almost every visitor to the west of the Kingdom eventually asks about, and from Jeddah it is a genuinely different journey from the one most people imagine. It is not a long transfer. It is a corridor of two halves, with one of the holiest cities in the world sitting in the middle of it, and the best way to plan it starts with that fact rather than with a rate.
This guide sets out the honest version. The published distances and what they mean in hours once the stops are counted, why the night in Madinah is usually the best part of the plan rather than a compromise, the four structures that actually work, which vehicle suits a road of this length, our published Jeddah day rates, and the AlUla season with the status of every entry stated plainly. It also says what we do not do, which on a journey of this distance matters as much as what we do.
In brief
| Route | Jeddah north to Madinah, then north to AlUla |
| Jeddah to Madinah | 410 kilometres, the published highway figure |
| Madinah to AlUla | About 300 kilometres direct; about 383 kilometres by the Khaybar road |
| Total | About 710 to 790 kilometres |
| Driving time | Eight to nine hours; nine to ten door to door |
| Same day return | No. We treat it as one way |
| Best structure for most | Two days with a night in Madinah, or fly and keep the car at the Jeddah end |
| Price | Quoted per route; Jeddah full days from SAR 1,380 |
The published distances, and what they mean in hours
The first half of the journey is the best documented road in the region. The Jeddah to Madinah highway is published at 410 kilometres, and it is a corridor we cover in detail in our Jeddah to Madinah by road guide. On its own it is five to six hours door to door with a sensible stop.
The second half has two figures worth knowing. When the Roads General Authority published the road connections to AlUla on 22 July 2026, it placed AlUla about 300 kilometres northwest of Madinah. A Saudi Press Agency report in August 2026 described the drive from Madinah by way of Khaybar at about 383 kilometres and four to five hours. The difference is the route, and it is why we quote a range rather than a single number: the direct road is shorter, while the Khaybar road passes one of the most interesting historic oases in the region and suits travellers who want to see it.
Put the two halves together and Jeddah to AlUla is about 710 to 790 kilometres, which is eight to nine hours of driving. Our planning rule for long corridors is simple: divide the distance by one hundred for the hours of driving, then add a quarter for fuel, prayer, a proper meal and the ordinary business of moving people and luggage in and out of a vehicle. That gives nine to ten hours door to door, one way, before anything goes wrong.
For comparison, Riyadh to AlUla is about 1,040 kilometres on the Authority's own figures, which we explain in our Riyadh to AlUla by road guide. Jeddah is the closer of the two big cities by a margin of several hours, and it is the only one from which the road is a realistic choice for a short trip. Our guide to how far apart Saudi cities really are puts every major corridor side by side.
Why we treat it as one way
A chauffeur driven day as we sell it is twelve hours. Nine to ten hours door to door fits inside that, just. The return does not. A same day Jeddah to AlUla and back is eighteen to twenty hours on the road, and there is no version of that which is safe for the chauffeur or pleasant for the passengers.
So we treat the journey as one way and build the return separately. That is not a sales device. It is the same rule we apply to every long corridor in the Kingdom, and it is the reason we will tell you at the first call which structure fits rather than quoting a figure for a day that cannot happen. If someone offers you a same day return, ask how many hours their chauffeur will be at the wheel. The answer settles it.
The Madinah overnight, and why it is usually the best part of the trip
Madinah sits almost exactly in the middle of the journey, and for a great many travellers it is a destination in its own right rather than a waypoint. A family travelling for ziyarat can leave Jeddah after breakfast, pray Asr or Maghrib at the Prophet's Mosque, sleep in Madinah, and continue north the following morning with a fresh chauffeur day ahead of them. Split that way, neither day is long, both arrive in daylight, and the Madinah stop becomes a feature rather than a delay. Our Madinah chauffeur service page covers what we run in the city itself.
There is one practical point to settle before you travel. Access to the central area around the Prophet's Mosque is governed by rules set by the relevant authorities, and they depend on who is travelling. Those rules are not a transport company's to interpret, so the sensible practice is to confirm them before the trip rather than to discover them on arrival. We explain the general position in the Jeddah to Madinah guide linked above, and we plan the stop accordingly.
Four structures that work
One: fly, and keep the car at the Jeddah end
AlUla International Airport sits about twenty five kilometres from the town centre and has been operating since 31 October 2011, with scheduled flights from Jeddah. For a short business trip this is the right answer: a clean airport transfer to King Abdulaziz International, and the same on the way back. Our guide to which Jeddah terminal you need covers that leg. Published Jeddah airport transfers start at SAR 210. Check the current flight schedule with the airline before you plan around it.
Two: two days by road, with a night in Madinah
The structure described above, and the one we recommend for families, pilgrims and anyone for whom the journey is part of the point. It is quoted per route, because it involves an overnight for the chauffeur and driver hours that a single twelve hour rate does not cover.
Three: road one way, fly the other
Drive up with the luggage, the children and the time to enjoy the landscape, then fly back to Jeddah when the trip is done. It halves the road time, keeps the scenic half of the experience, and is often the best balance for a group with more bags than a short flight comfortably allows.
Four: the staged corporate move
This is what delegations and production crews actually do. The vehicles and equipment go by road over two days while the principals fly. It is the least glamorous structure and the one that works most often. Our corporate transport and group transport work sits here.
Which vehicle for a road of this length
Distance changes the vehicle question. On a city day the choice is about presence. On eight hours of highway it is about seat comfort at the sixth hour rather than the first, luggage that fits inside the vehicle, and ride quality that does not tire anyone out.
| Party | Sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One to three, light luggage | Lexus ES, BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S Class | The difference between a good seat and an adequate one compounds over eight hours |
| Four to six, or a family with bags | GMC Yukon or Toyota Fortuner | Space for luggage and a calmer ride on long open highway |
| Up to eleven | Hyundai H1, Staria or Toyota Hiace | Keeps the party and the bags together in one vehicle |
| Executive group up to five | Mercedes V Class | Lounge seating that makes a long day workable |
| Twelve and above | Toyota Coaster, or the 34 and 47 seat coaches | On a road this long the coach is the more comfortable vehicle, not the compromise |
The fleet page carries the full range with seating and luggage, and the Jeddah chauffeur service page covers what we run from the departure end.
What it costs
Jeddah to AlUla is an intercity route, and intercity routes are quoted per route rather than carrying a published price, because the answer depends on the structure: one way or two days, an overnight in Madinah or not, and whether the vehicle returns empty. What we publish is the Jeddah twelve hour day, which is what the Jeddah legs of any AlUla plan are built from. VAT applies. Full detail sits on the pricing page.
| Vehicle | Seats | Jeddah full day, 12 hours |
|---|---|---|
| SUV, Toyota Fortuner or similar | 6 | SAR 1,380 |
| Sedan, Ford Taurus or similar | 3 | SAR 1,725 |
| Luxury Sedan, Lexus ES or similar | 3 | SAR 2,070 |
| SUV, GMC Yukon or similar | 6 | SAR 2,070 |
| Hyundai H1 | 11 | SAR 2,070 |
| Toyota Hiace | 11 | SAR 2,070 |
| Hyundai Staria | 11 | SAR 2,300 |
| Toyota Coaster | 21 | SAR 2,300 |
| Luxury Coach | 47 | SAR 3,220 |
| VIP Luxury Coach | 34 | SAR 3,450 |
| Mercedes V Class | 5 | SAR 4,025 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | 7 | SAR 4,370 |
| BMW 7 Series | 3 | SAR 4,600 |
| Mercedes S Class | 3 | SAR 4,830 |
One observation of our own rather than a published claim: on the Jeddah card the Fortuner at SAR 1,380 is the cheapest twelve hour day and it seats six, while the sedan seats three. On a long road day with luggage it is also the more suitable vehicle of the two. For the days either side of the trip, our full day chauffeur service explains how a twelve hour booking works.
What is waiting at the other end
It is worth saying why anybody makes this journey, because it shapes the plan. The headline site is Hegra, which entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2008 as the Kingdom's first World Heritage Site: a Nabataean city of 116 tombs about 22 kilometres from the centre of AlUla. Around it sit Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and its inscriptions, AlUla Old Town, Elephant Rock and Maraya. These sites are spread across a wide governorate, so the ground movement once you arrive is a separate question from the journey, and one that belongs to operators based in AlUla itself.
The AlUla season, with the status of each entry
The timing of a trip should follow the season, and each entry below carries its status as published. AlUla Skies Festival runs 6 to 15 November 2026 and is confirmed with published dates; our AlUla Skies Festival guide explains why a dawn balloon flight means sleeping in AlUla the night before. Winter at Tantora runs 17 December 2026 to 9 January 2027 and is confirmed, although its programme of performers has not been announced. Ultra Gobi AlUla runs 13 to 20 January 2027 and is confirmed. AlUla Azimuth, the AlUla Camel Cup, the AlUla Arts Festival, the Wellness Festival and Desert X have not announced their next editions.
The practical consequence is that November and the stretch from mid December to mid January are when accommodation and vehicles tighten. Those are the windows worth quoting early. For event and delegation movement generally, our event transportation page sets out how we structure it.
Planning tips that save the day
- Leave Jeddah after breakfast, not before dawn. On the two day plan there is no reason to start in the dark. Arriving in Madinah in the afternoon is the point.
- Count the bags, not just the people. Eight hours is a long time to sit with a suitcase at your feet. Tell us the luggage and we will size the vehicle to it.
- Book the AlUla accommodation first. In festival weeks it is the scarce part of the plan. The road can be arranged around it; the reverse rarely works.
- Decide the return before you leave. Fly back, or drive back on a separate day. Either is fine; deciding on the day is not.
- Keep one number for the whole trip. Ours is +966 56 644 0190.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is AlUla from Jeddah by road?
About 710 to 790 kilometres. The Jeddah to Madinah highway is published at 410 kilometres, and AlUla is about 300 kilometres beyond Madinah on the direct road, or about 383 kilometres by the Khaybar road. The range reflects the route you choose.
How long is the drive from Jeddah to AlUla?
Eight to nine hours of driving, and nine to ten hours door to door once fuel, prayer, a meal and loading are counted. That is a full chauffeur day in one direction, which is why we never plan it as a same day return.
Can I go from Jeddah to AlUla and back in one day?
Not by road, and we will not quote one. It would mean eighteen to twenty hours on the road. The workable versions are two days with a night in Madinah, road one way and a flight the other, or flying both ways with a chauffeur at the Jeddah end.
Is it better to fly or drive from Jeddah to AlUla?
For a short business trip, fly: AlUla International Airport is about twenty five kilometres from the town centre and has scheduled flights from Jeddah. Driving earns its place for families, groups with luggage, pilgrims who want to stop in Madinah, and anyone for whom the landscape is part of the trip.
Should we stop overnight in Madinah?
For most travellers, yes. Madinah sits close to the halfway point, so splitting there makes two comfortable days instead of one exhausting one, and for Muslim travellers it adds a visit to the Prophet's Mosque. Confirm the access rules for the central area before you travel, as they depend on who is travelling.
What does a chauffeur from Jeddah to AlUla cost?
Intercity routes are quoted per route because the price depends on the structure and on whether the vehicle returns empty. Published Jeddah twelve hour days start at SAR 1,380 for a Toyota Fortuner seating six, and a Mercedes S Class day is SAR 4,830. Ask us for a written quote with the dates and party size.
Booking it
Tell us the dates, how many people, how much luggage, whether you want to stop in Madinah, and how you plan to come back. That is enough for us to recommend a structure, name a vehicle class and send a written quote. Call or message +966 56 644 0190, or write to info@roarkchauffeur.com.
