Riyadh to AlUla by Road: The Eleven Hour Question, the Two Routes and What It Actually Costs
Riyadh to AlUla is about 1,040 kilometres and about eleven hours of driving via Qassim and Hail, on the Roads General Authority's own published figures. That is longer than a twelve hour chauffeur day once stops are counted, so it is bought as a multi day charter or flown. Riyadh full day rates start at SAR 1,150. Intercity is quoted per route.
AlUla is the destination almost every visitor to Saudi Arabia now wants to see, and it is the one journey where the honest answer to "can you drive us there" starts with arithmetic rather than a rate. So this guide leads with the arithmetic. On 22 July 2026 the Roads General Authority published the road connections between Riyadh and AlUla, and the figures it gave are the ones worth planning against: about 1,040 kilometres and about eleven hours by the Qassim and Hail route, or about 1,163 kilometres and about eleven hours and thirty five minutes by the Qassim and Madinah route.
Eleven hours is a driving figure, not a travel figure. Add fuel, prayer, a meal and the ordinary business of moving a group in and out of a vehicle, and a one way run to AlUla is a long day on its own. The return makes it two. Any operator who quotes you a single twelve hour day for Riyadh to AlUla and back has either not done the journey or is not telling you what will actually happen on it.
What follows is the useful version. What the Authority actually published, which of the two routes is the better one and why, the three sensible ways to structure the trip, which vehicle suits a run of this length, our published Riyadh day rates, and what is in the AlUla calendar this season with the status of each entry stated plainly. It also sets out what we do not do, which on a journey of this distance matters more than what we do.
What the Roads General Authority actually published
On 22 July 2026 the Roads General Authority set out the road connections between Riyadh and AlUla, describing AlUla as one of the region's most important tourist destinations. It named two routes.
The first runs Riyadh to Qassim to Hail to AlUla, at approximately 1,040 kilometres and approximately eleven hours. The second runs Riyadh to Qassim to Madinah to AlUla, at approximately 1,163 kilometres and approximately eleven hours and thirty five minutes. Both begin the same way, up the corridor to Qassim, and then separate.
The same release put AlUla 300 kilometres northwest of Madinah, described its continental climate, and noted the historic oasis running twenty kilometres with around 200,000 citrus trees across twenty nine varieties. For scale, the Kingdom's road network runs beyond 73,000 kilometres, and the Madinah region alone carries 8,184 kilometres of it.
Those are the numbers we plan against, and we cite them because they come from the authority responsible for the roads rather than from a mapping app that has never accounted for a fuel stop.
The two routes, and why the Hail one usually wins
The Hail route is shorter by about 123 kilometres and quicker by about thirty five minutes on the published figures. That alone would settle it, but there are two further reasons it is usually the right call.
The first is the shape of the driving. The Qassim and Hail corridor is long, open and predictable, which is exactly the profile you want when the constraint is driver hours rather than traffic. The first leg of it, Riyadh up to Buraidah, is a corridor we publish a separate guide to, and it is the leg most people underestimate. If you want the detail on that first stretch, our Riyadh to Qassim by road guide covers it properly.
The second is routing simplicity. The Madinah option adds distance and time, and it routes a party through a city with its own access considerations that depend on who is travelling. Those requirements are set by the relevant authorities and are not a transport company's to interpret, so the sensible practice is to confirm them before you travel rather than to discover them at a checkpoint. The Hail route does not raise the question at all, and it is faster. That is usually the end of the discussion.
Where the Madinah route earns its place is when Madinah is a destination in its own right rather than a waypoint. A party already planning time at the Prophet's Mosque can split the journey there and continue north the following morning, which turns the extra 123 kilometres into a feature. Our Madinah chauffeur service page covers what we run in that city.
Why this is not a one day transfer, and the arithmetic that proves it
Start with the published eleven hours. A chauffeur driven day as we sell it is twelve hours. On paper the drive fits. In practice it does not, and the reason is that the eleven hours is pure driving.
A run of 1,040 kilometres needs at least two fuel stops. A party of any size needs a proper meal stop rather than a service station stop. Prayer times fall where they fall. Loading and unloading a group with luggage at either end takes longer than anyone budgets for. Add those honestly and the door to door figure is thirteen to fourteen hours before anything goes wrong. That is one hour to two hours past the end of a twelve hour day, and it puts a chauffeur at the wheel for longer than anybody should want on a desert highway at the end of it.
Then consider the return. Unless the party is flying home from AlUla, the same journey has to happen again. Buying it as two separate long days with an overnight in between is not a compromise, it is the only version that is safe and the only version that arrives with everybody in a fit state to do anything.
This is the same logic that governs shorter routes, only louder. On a city transfer the choice between a point to point movement and a full day is a question of value. On a 1,040 kilometre run it is a question of whether the plan is real. We set out the general version of that trade in our guide on transfers against full days in Riyadh.
What is actually in AlUla
It is worth saying why anybody makes this journey, because it changes how the trip should be built.
AlUla sits in the northwest of the Kingdom and falls administratively under the Madinah region. Its population was about 60,103 at the 2022 census. The Royal Commission for AlUla was established by royal decree on 20 July 2017 and is chaired by the Crown Prince.
The headline site is Hegra, which entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2008 as Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site. It is a Nabataean city, the second largest testament to that civilisation after Petra, and it served as the Nabataean second capital, flourishing between the first century BC and the second century AD. It holds 116 archaeological tombs and covers over thirteen square kilometres within Wadi al Qura, about 22 kilometres from AlUla's centre.
Around it sit Dadan, the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite capital, and Jabal Ikmah with its rock inscriptions. AlUla Old Town holds about 900 clay brick homes and 400 shops. Elephant Rock stands 171 feet high. Maraya is the largest reflective building in the world. The oasis itself carries around 200,000 citrus trees, 90,000 moringa peregrina trees and 2.3 million date palms.
The practical point buried in that list is that these sites are spread across a wide governorate. A party that has driven eleven hours to get there is going to need ground movement once it arrives, which is a separate question from the journey and one that belongs to operators based in AlUla itself. We say that plainly because the alternative is pretending otherwise.
The three sensible ways to do it
There are exactly three structures that hold up, and which one is right depends on what the party is optimising for.
The first is fly and transfer, and it is the right answer for most business travellers. AlUla International Airport sits about twenty five kilometres from the city centre and has been operating since 31 October 2011. On this structure the chauffeur work sits at the Riyadh end: a clean airport transfer to King Khalid International, and the same on the return. Our Riyadh airport transfer guide covers what that leg involves. It costs the least, it wastes no day, and it is the option we recommend when time is the binding constraint.
The second is the two day road charter. Leave Riyadh early, break the journey at Qassim or Hail, arrive AlUla the following day. This is the right structure when the journey is part of the point, when the party is large enough that flying becomes expensive and awkward, or when there is a lot of luggage or equipment. It is quoted per route rather than off the published day card, because it involves overnight arrangements and driver hours that a twelve hour rate does not cover.
The third is the staged corporate move, which is what delegations and production crews actually do. The vehicles and the equipment go by road over two days while the principals fly. It is the least glamorous of the three and it is the one that works most often. Our corporate transport and group transport work sits here.
Which vehicle for a run of this length
Distance changes the vehicle question. On a city day the choice is about presence and comfort. On 1,040 kilometres it is about ride quality over hours, seat comfort at the fifth hour rather than the first, luggage capacity that does not require a compromise, and range between stops.
For one to three passengers on a long road day the luxury sedan earns its price in a way it does not in traffic, because the difference between a good seat and an adequate one compounds over eleven hours. For four to six, the SUV is the sensible default and the Fortuner is the value option. For a group up to eleven, a van keeps everybody together and keeps the luggage inside the vehicle rather than on a roof.
Above eleven, the Coaster at 21 seats and the coaches at 34 and 47 seats are the honest options, and on a run this long the coach is genuinely the more comfortable vehicle rather than the compromise it is over short distances. The fleet page carries the full range, and the Riyadh chauffeur service page covers what we run from the departure end.
What a chauffeur driven day costs from Riyadh
Below are our published Riyadh twelve hour day rates. They are the rates the Riyadh legs of any AlUla plan are built from, including the airport transfer structure and the first day of a two day charter. The AlUla run itself is quoted per route, for the reasons set out above. VAT applies. The extra hour rate is what you pay beyond the twelve. Full detail sits on the pricing page.
| Vehicle | Seats | Full day, 12 hours | Extra hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUV, Toyota Fortuner or similar | 6 | SAR 1,150 | SAR 105 |
| Sedan, Ford Taurus or similar | 3 | SAR 1,380 | SAR 115 |
| Luxury Sedan, Lexus ES or similar | 3 | SAR 1,495 | SAR 140 |
| Hyundai H1 | 11 | SAR 1,610 | SAR 140 |
| SUV, GMC Yukon or similar | 6 | SAR 1,725 | SAR 175 |
| Toyota Hiace | 11 | SAR 1,725 | SAR 165 |
| Hyundai Staria | 11 | SAR 1,840 | SAR 175 |
| Toyota Coaster | 21 | SAR 2,070 | SAR 185 |
| Luxury Coach | 47 | SAR 2,875 | SAR 290 |
| VIP Luxury Coach | 34 | SAR 2,990 | SAR 290 |
| Mercedes V Class | 5 | SAR 3,450 | SAR 345 |
| BMW 7 Series | 3 | SAR 4,025 | SAR 345 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | 7 | SAR 4,025 | SAR 370 |
| Mercedes S Class | 3 | SAR 4,370 | SAR 405 |
One figure in that table is worth reading twice, because most people guess it wrong. The Fortuner at SAR 1,150 is the cheapest full day vehicle we publish in Riyadh, cheaper than the sedan at SAR 1,380, and it seats six rather than three. On a long road day it is also the more suitable vehicle of the two. That is the rare case where the value option and the right option are the same option.
The AlUla season, with the status of each entry
AlUla runs a defined season, and the timing of a trip should follow it. Each entry below carries its status as verified against the official AlUla calendar, because an event that has been announced and an event that has published dates are different things and planning against the wrong one wastes a week.
AlUla Skies Festival runs 6 to 15 November 2026 and is confirmed with published dates. Winter at Tantora runs 17 December 2026 to 9 January 2027 and is confirmed, although its programme of performers has not been announced. Ultra Gobi AlUla runs 13 to 20 January 2027 and is confirmed. The AlUla Arts Festival and Desert X AlUla currently show only their 2026 editions, which have already run, so their next editions are not announced. AlUla Azimuth, the AlUla Camel Cup and the AlUla Wellness Festival are not announced and are absent from the current calendar.
For anyone planning ground transport around those windows, the practical consequence is that November and the December to January stretch are the periods when accommodation and vehicles tighten, and they are the periods worth quoting early. For event and delegation movement generally, our event transportation page sets out how we structure it.
What we do and what we do not
We are a chauffeur company operating in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. We drive the Riyadh end of an AlUla plan properly: the airport transfers, the full days either side, the corporate and group movement, and the intercity legs quoted per route. We are straightforward about the fact that ground movement once you are inside AlUla is a different job with different local knowledge, and we would rather say so than quote you for something a resident operator does better.
We also do not sell a same day Riyadh to AlUla return, because the published driving time makes it either unsafe or untrue. If someone quotes you one, ask them how many hours their chauffeur will be at the wheel and how many fuel stops are in the plan. The answer settles it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Riyadh from AlUla by road?
About 1,040 kilometres via Qassim and Hail, or about 1,163 kilometres via Qassim and Madinah. Those are the figures the Roads General Authority published on 22 July 2026, and they are the ones to plan against rather than a mapping app estimate that does not account for stops.
How long does it take to drive from Riyadh to AlUla?
About eleven hours by the Hail route and about eleven hours and thirty five minutes by the Madinah route, on the Authority's published figures. Those are driving times. Once fuel, prayer, a meal and loading are added, the honest door to door figure is thirteen to fourteen hours, which is why the journey is planned as two days rather than one.
Can I book a chauffeur from Riyadh to AlUla and back in one day?
No, and we will not quote one. Eleven hours each way is twenty two hours of driving before a single stop. Any operator offering a same day return is either not driving the route as described or is putting a chauffeur at the wheel for a stretch nobody should accept. The workable versions are a two day road charter or flying and taking ground transport at each end.
Is it better to fly or drive to AlUla from Riyadh?
Fly, for most business travel. AlUla International Airport is about twenty five kilometres from the city centre and has been operating since October 2011, and flying removes two days of road time from the itinerary. Driving earns its place when the party is large, when there is equipment or heavy luggage, or when the journey itself is part of the trip.
Which route to AlUla is better, through Hail or through Madinah?
The Hail route in most cases. It is about 123 kilometres shorter and about thirty five minutes quicker, and it is a long, open, predictable corridor. The Madinah route earns its place when Madinah is a destination in its own right rather than a waypoint, in which case the extra distance buys a natural overnight stop.
What does a chauffeur driven day cost in Riyadh?
Published Riyadh twelve hour rates start at SAR 1,150 for an SUV such as the Toyota Fortuner and SAR 1,380 for a sedan. A Mercedes S Class day is SAR 4,370. The AlUla legs themselves are quoted per route rather than off the day card, because overnight arrangements and driver hours sit outside a twelve hour rate.
Booking it
Tell us the dates, roughly how many people, how much luggage, and whether you are flying into AlUla or driving. That is enough for us to say which of the three structures fits, name a vehicle class, quote the Riyadh legs off the published card and quote the intercity legs per route.
