Jeddah to Yanbu by Road: Distance, Drive Time, Same Day Visits and What It Costs

Roark Chauffeur
11 min read

Jeddah to Yanbu by road is about 330 to 350 kilometres up the Red Sea coast, roughly three and a half hours of driving and four to four and a half hours door to door. It is one of the easiest intercity drives in the Kingdom: a single coastal highway north past Thuwal, King Abdullah Economic City and Rabigh. A private chauffeur turns it into a same day return, a site visit with a working day in between, or a one way move onward to Madinah. Intercity journeys are quoted per route.

Yanbu sits on the Red Sea coast north of Jeddah, and it draws two very different kinds of traveller. One is the engineer, contractor or manager heading to Yanbu Industrial City for a site visit, an audit or a shutdown. The other is the family or the diver heading for the old town and the coral reefs. Both usually start in Jeddah, because that is where the international flights land, and both face the same question: fly the short hop to Yanbu, take the bus, or go by road with a driver.

This guide sets out the distance and the drive time, the structures that work for business and for leisure, which vehicle suits the trip, what it costs on our published Jeddah rates, and how Yanbu fits with Madinah for travellers who want to see both. It sits alongside our Jeddah to Madinah by road guide and our table of distances between Saudi cities.

The Distance and the Drive

Published route planners put the drive at a little over 330 kilometres and about three hours twenty minutes of moving time. In practice the figure that matters is door to door. Leaving a hotel on the Corniche or in Al Rawdah, the first half hour is spent getting clear of Jeddah. At the other end, Yanbu itself is spread out: the old town and the seafront are in Yanbu Al Bahr, while Yanbu Industrial City lies to the south east, and a hotel or a plant gate can add a further fifteen to thirty minutes. We plan on four to four and a half hours and are rarely far from that.

The road is the reason this trip is so comfortable. It is a single, well maintained coastal highway for almost the entire distance, with service areas along the way and very little climbing. There are no mountain passes, no city centres to cross in the middle and no complicated junctions. For a passenger in the back of a good car it is three and a half hours of quiet time: enough for a call, a report or a proper rest after an overnight flight.

One practical note. Much of the drive runs through open country with long straight sections. That is exactly where a professional chauffeur earns his place, because the risk on roads like this is not the traffic, it is fatigue. A visitor who has just landed after a long flight should not be driving it themselves.

Flying, the Bus, or a Car with a Driver

Yanbu has its own airport, Prince Abdul Mohsin bin Abdulaziz Airport, a short drive from the city. Flights from Jeddah are short, but they are not frequent, and the time at both airports adds up quickly. Intercity buses run the coast road too, at a lower fare and a longer journey time of five hours or more.

Option Best for The catch
Flight to YanbuA single traveller whose timing fits the scheduleFew departures; check in, security and a car at the Yanbu end still needed
Intercity busLowest fareFive hours or more, fixed times, station to station
Private chauffeurBusiness visitors, families, groups and anyone with luggage or equipmentA full day of the vehicle, so it pays most when the time is used well

For two or more people, or for anyone with a schedule to keep at the Yanbu end, the car usually wins on total time. It leaves when you are ready, goes straight from the arrivals hall or the hotel to the site, waits while you work and brings you back the same evening. There is no second car to arrange and no airport at the far end.

Four Ways to Structure the Trip

1. The same day site visit

The most common business pattern. Collection from a Jeddah hotel early in the morning, arrival in Yanbu mid morning, four to five hours on site, and back in Jeddah for the evening. It is a long day for the vehicle and the chauffeur, so we plan it as a full day with the hours agreed in advance, and with rest built in for the chauffeur while you are on site.

2. Straight from the airport

For visitors landing at King Abdulaziz International, the car can meet the flight and go directly north, which saves a night in Jeddah. This works best on morning arrivals. Send the flight number rather than the scheduled time so the pickup follows the real arrival; our Jeddah airport terminal guide explains where the chauffeur will be waiting.

3. Overnight in Yanbu

For audits, shutdowns and multi day projects, the simplest plan is a transfer up, local days in Yanbu between hotel and site, and a transfer back at the end. The vehicle can stay with you for the whole visit, or travel separately for each leg, depending on which is better value for the dates. We set out both options in the quote.

4. Jeddah, Yanbu and Madinah as one journey

Yanbu is about 245 kilometres from Madinah, a little under three hours. That makes a triangle that works well for families and for pilgrims who want a day by the sea: Jeddah to Yanbu, a night on the coast, then Yanbu to Madinah, finishing at the Haram or at Madinah airport. It is longer than the direct road from Jeddah to Madinah, which our Jeddah to Madinah guide puts at 410 kilometres, but it turns a transfer into part of the trip. The same car and chauffeur can stay with you the whole way.

The whole range is on our fleet page. For teams that need several vehicles at once, our group transportation service handles the coordination.

What It Costs

Intercity routes are quoted per route, because the price depends on the structure of the trip and on whether the vehicle returns empty. For a same day visit, the clearest reference is our published Jeddah full day rate, which covers twelve hours with the vehicle and chauffeur.

Vehicle Seats Jeddah full day, 12 hours
SUV, Toyota Fortuner or similar6SAR 1,380
Sedan, Ford Taurus or similar3SAR 1,725

A same day return of seven to eight hours on the road plus time on site fits inside a twelve hour day, which is why we use the full day card as the starting point. A one way trip, an overnight or the Madinah triangle is priced on its own structure. Every published figure is on our pricing page, and Jeddah airport transfers start from SAR 210 for a Toyota Fortuner. Our full day chauffeur service explains how a twelve hour booking works.

Business Travel to Yanbu

Most of our Yanbu work is corporate. Yanbu Industrial City is one of the Kingdom's largest industrial centres, and it receives a steady flow of visiting engineers, inspectors, consultants and executives, often on short notice and often arriving in Jeddah from abroad. What they need is predictable: a named chauffeur, a car that is on time at six in the morning, someone who knows the difference between the old town and the industrial city, and a driver who waits at the gate rather than disappearing for the day.

For companies sending people regularly, a corporate account keeps billing on one invoice and the booking details on file. Assistants who book for others will find our booking brief checklist useful: for Yanbu the most important lines are the site name and gate, the time on site and whether the return is the same day.

Leisure: the Coast and the Old Town

For leisure travellers Yanbu is a quieter Red Sea alternative to Jeddah. The historic quarter of Yanbu Al Bahr, with its coral stone houses, is worth an unhurried walk, and the reefs offshore are among the best known dive sites on the Saudi coast. Families coming from Jeddah often make it a two day trip, and some continue to Madinah afterwards. A chauffeur makes the logistics simple: the same car takes you to the hotel, to the dive centre or the beach, to dinner and onward, with luggage handled throughout.

Further along the same coast, King Abdullah Economic City near Rabigh hosts the start and finish of the Dakar Rally from 1 to 15 January 2027 on the organiser's published dates, which brings teams and visitors onto exactly this road. If you are planning travel for that fortnight, book early.

Planning Tips

Leave early. A departure from Jeddah before seven puts you in Yanbu before the working day is half over and back before late evening traffic.

Name the site, not just the city. Yanbu Al Bahr and Yanbu Industrial City are different places. Send the plant or hotel name and, for industrial sites, the gate.

Check site entry rules in advance. Industrial sites often need the visitor's details ahead of time and sometimes the vehicle's too. Tell us and we will send the chauffeur and vehicle details when you need them.

Decide one way or return at booking. It changes the price and the chauffeur plan more than anything else.

Keep the day realistic. Seven to eight hours on the road is a full day already. If the site visit will run long, an overnight in Yanbu is safer and often more comfortable.
