Madinah to Jeddah Airport: When to Leave, Train or Car, and How the Departure Transfer Works
King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is roughly 400 kilometres from central Madinah, usually five to six hours by road including one rest stop. For an international flight, plan to leave your Madinah hotel nine to ten hours before departure, and confirm your terminal the day before. A pre booked chauffeur collects you at the hotel at an agreed time, loads the luggage once and drives door to terminal. The Madinah route is quoted per route and fixed in writing before you travel.
Many pilgrims end their journey in Madinah but fly home from Jeddah. The final days at the Prophet's Mosque are calm and unhurried, and then the trip ends with the longest single journey of the whole visit: around 400 kilometres to an airport, with a fixed check in deadline at the far end. It is the leg that most deserves a plan and most often gets the least.
This guide covers that departure: whether the train or the car is the better answer for your group, when to leave the hotel, how to confirm your terminal, what the drive is like, four ways to shape the last day, which vehicle suits a long run with full luggage, and how the transfer is priced. It is the return half of our Jeddah to Madinah by road guide, and it pairs with our Makkah to Jeddah airport departure guide for pilgrims who finish in Makkah instead.

Train or Car: The Honest Answer
The Haramain high speed railway links Madinah with Jeddah and calls at a station at King Abdulaziz International Airport. For many travellers it is the faster option, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The question is not which is quicker on paper, but which gets your particular group and luggage to the check in desk with the least strain.
When the Train Is the Better Choice
One or two travellers with light bags, a confirmed seat on a convenient departure, and a hotel close to the Madinah station. In that case the train is hard to beat. Check the current timetable and luggage allowance with Haramain directly, because both can change.
When the Car Is the Better Choice
Families and groups with heavy luggage, elderly parents or anyone who finds stations and transfers tiring, travellers who cannot get seats on the right train, and anyone who wants to stop for prayer or rest on their own schedule. The car also removes two transfers: hotel to station in Madinah, and platform to terminal in Jeddah. With a chauffeur the bags are loaded once at the hotel and unloaded once at the terminal kerb. Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents explains why that matters.
When to Leave Madinah
Work backwards from the flight. Airlines generally ask international passengers to be at the airport about three hours before departure and close check in well before that. Add five to six hours on the road and at least an hour of margin for traffic, prayer stops and the unexpected. That gives our planning rule:
| Flight | Leave the Madinah hotel |
|---|---|
| International | Nine to ten hours before departure |
| Domestic | Eight to nine hours before departure |
| Peak season or Thursday evening | Add at least one more hour |
This is planning advice, not an airline rule. Your airline's own check in deadline always comes first, so read it on your booking and give it to us with the flight number.
Check Your Terminal the Day Before
Jeddah's airport has changed a great deal in 2026, and several airlines have moved terminal this autumn. Many Umrah charters use the dedicated Hajj and Umrah Terminal. Check your airline's website or app the evening before, and read our guides to Jeddah airport terminals and to the Hajj Terminal and Terminal 4. Arriving at the wrong building costs time you will not have after a five hour drive.
Give your chauffeur the flight number when you book. We confirm the terminal again on the morning, and if a flight is retimed we would rather move the collection than have you wait at the kerb.
The Drive Itself
The route follows the main highway between the two cities, the same road described in our Jeddah to Madinah guide, in reverse. It is long, straight and well served, but it crosses open country with long gaps between towns, which is exactly why a planned vehicle and an experienced driver matter.
Rest and Prayer Stops
Plan one main stop roughly halfway for prayer, refreshments and stretching. Tell the chauffeur at the start if anyone in the group needs more frequent breaks. The stop is part of the five to six hours we quote, not an extra.
Water, Comfort and the Cabin
Chilled water is in the car, the cabin is cooled before you board, and the seats are set for a long run. Keep passports, tickets and medication in a small bag on your lap rather than in the boot.
Four Ways to Plan the Last Day
The right plan depends on the flight time more than anything else. A long drive is easy in daylight and far more tiring after a late night of worship, so match the departure to the way your group actually spends its final day in Madinah. Friday also deserves thought: if you want to attend Jumuah prayer at the Prophet's Mosque before leaving, build the whole schedule around it and allow for the crowds and traffic that follow the prayer.
Morning Departure for an Evening Flight
The simplest plan. Pray Fajr at the Prophet's Mosque, breakfast, check out, and leave mid morning. You reach Jeddah in the afternoon with a comfortable margin.
A Night in Jeddah Before an Early Flight
For flights before midday, driving through the night is rarely wise. Travel the afternoon before, sleep near the airport, and take a short transfer in the morning.
A Last Afternoon in Jeddah
With a late flight, leave Madinah early and book a full day that ends at the terminal. The luggage stays in the car while you visit Historic Jeddah or the corniche.
Via Makkah for a Final Umrah
Some families route through Makkah to perform a last Umrah before flying. That is a longer day and a different route, quoted per route like the others. Plan it with time to rest, and read our Makkah to Jeddah airport guide for the final leg.
Which Vehicle for a Long Drive with Luggage
Luggage on the way home is usually heavier than on the way in. Choose by bags as well as people. Our fleet page has the full specifications, and our guide to Umrah group vehicle choice goes deeper.

How the Collection Works
You send the hotel, flight number, passenger count and number of bags. We confirm the vehicle, the collection time and the fixed price in writing. The evening before, the chauffeur's name and number reach you. On the day the car is at the hotel entrance ahead of time, the luggage is counted and loaded, and you set off. We cover Madinah and Jeddah every day, and our airport transfers page explains the drop off at each terminal.
If your flight is delayed or retimed after we have confirmed, tell us as soon as you know. On a route this long we adjust the collection time rather than leave you waiting at the airport for hours, and if the change is large we will talk you through the options before the day.
Planning Tips
- Book the departure when you book the arrival. Our Madinah airport to the Haram guide covers the other end.
- Count the bags the night before, including any Zamzam, and tell us if the number has grown.
- Keep passports and tickets in hand luggage, not in the boot.
- Check your flight status on the morning. Schedules across the region are still being adjusted, and a retimed flight is easier to handle at breakfast than on the highway.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Jeddah airport from Madinah?
Roughly 400 kilometres from central Madinah to King Abdulaziz International Airport, usually five to six hours by road including one rest stop.
How many hours before my flight should I leave Madinah?
For an international flight, leave your hotel nine to ten hours before departure. For a domestic flight, eight to nine hours. Add at least an hour in peak season.
Is the train faster than a car from Madinah to Jeddah airport?
Usually yes, and the Haramain railway calls at the airport. A car is often better for families, heavy luggage and elderly travellers, because it removes the station transfers at both ends.
Can we stop for prayer on the way?
Yes. One main stop is built into the journey time, and the chauffeur will stop for prayer whenever you ask.
How much is a transfer from Madinah to Jeddah airport?
It is quoted per route and fixed in writing before you travel. Send the hotel, flight, passengers and bags to +966 56 644 0190 for an exact figure. A Jeddah full day of twelve hours starts from SAR 1,380 if you plan a last day in the city.
Which vehicle suits a family going home with full luggage?
For four to six people, a GMC Yukon or Mercedes V Class. For seven to eleven, a Hyundai Staria, H1, Toyota Hiace or Mercedes Sprinter. Tell us the number of bags and we will confirm the right size.
