Makkah to Jeddah Airport: When to Leave, Which Terminal and How the Departure Transfer Works

Roark Chauffeur
11 min read

King Abdulaziz International Airport is roughly 90 kilometres from central Makkah, usually 60 to 90 minutes by road on Highway 40 and longer at peak times. For an international flight, plan to leave your Makkah hotel four and a half to five hours before departure, and confirm your terminal the day before. A pre booked chauffeur collects you at the hotel at an agreed time, loads the luggage and drives door to terminal. The Makkah route is quoted per route and fixed in writing before you travel.

Most Umrah planning goes into the arrival: the flight, the miqat, the first sight of the Haram. The departure gets far less attention, and it is where the avoidable problems happen. A taxi that does not come, a car too small for the luggage that has doubled since arrival, an underestimated drive on a Thursday evening, or a traveller standing outside the wrong terminal in a Jeddah airport that has changed a great deal this year.

This guide is about that last journey. It covers when to leave the hotel, how long the drive really takes, how to work out your terminal, what to plan for with luggage and Zamzam, how to turn a late flight into a calm last day in Jeddah, which vehicle suits your group, and how the transfer is priced. It is the return half of our Jeddah airport to Makkah guide, and it sits alongside our guide to Jeddah airport terminals.

The Departure Transfer, in Brief

When to leave, domestic flightThree and a half to four hours before departure

When to Leave Your Makkah Hotel

Work backwards from the flight. Most airlines ask passengers on international flights to be at the terminal around three hours before departure, and check in desks close earlier than many travellers expect. Your own airline's rule is the one that counts, so read it on the booking confirmation rather than relying on a general figure.

Then add the road. In clear conditions the drive from the Haram district to the airport is about an hour. The first part is the slowest: getting away from a hotel close to the Haram, through streets that fill around each prayer, can take as long as twenty or thirty minutes before the car even reaches the expressway. Highway 40 itself is wide and fast. The approach to the airport is usually straightforward, but the terminal forecourts become busy when several flights depart close together.

Put together, those numbers give a simple rule:

  • International flight: leave the hotel four and a half to five hours before departure.
  • Domestic flight: leave three and a half to four hours before departure.
  • Thursday or Friday evening, Ramadan, school holidays: add at least another hour.
  • Departing straight after Jumuah or a busy prayer: plan the collection for well after the crowds have cleared the streets around the Haram.

It feels generous. It is meant to. The cost of arriving forty minutes early is a coffee at the terminal; the cost of arriving forty minutes late is a new ticket.

Check Your Terminal the Day Before

Jeddah airport has changed more in the past few weeks than in the previous several years. Terminal 4, the rebuilt former South Terminal, opened in phases from 27 September 2026 for foreign airlines. Foreign airlines have been moving out of the North Terminal, and several have moved to the Hajj and Umrah Terminal. Terminal 1 remains the main terminal for Saudia, flynas and flyadeal.

The practical consequence is that the terminal printed on a ticket bought months ago may not be the terminal your flight now uses. The day before you leave, check three things:

  1. Your airline's own website or app for the current departure terminal.
  2. The flight status on the morning of departure, as schedules across the region are still being adjusted and some flights are retimed at short notice.
  3. That your chauffeur has the flight number, not just the airline name, so the terminal can be confirmed against the live schedule.

Our Jeddah terminals guide sets out which airlines use which building, and our guide to the Hajj and Umrah Terminal and Terminal 4 covers the newest moves in detail.

Luggage, Gifts and Zamzam

Umrah luggage almost always grows. Prayer mats, dates, gifts for family, clothing from the souqs and, for many travellers, Zamzam water for home. A sedan that carried two passengers and two cases from the airport may not carry the same two passengers and four cases back. This is the single most common reason a departure goes wrong: the car arrives, the bags do not fit, and the search for a second vehicle begins forty minutes before the time you should have left.

Tell us the luggage count, not just the passenger count, when you book the return. As a rough guide, count every suitcase, every carton and every Zamzam container as a separate item.

Airlines set their own rules for carrying Zamzam water, including how it must be packed, how much is allowed and whether it counts against your baggage allowance. Check your airline's rule before you buy, and keep the receipt from an approved outlet if your airline asks for sealed containers. Your chauffeur will load it carefully, but only the airline can tell you whether it flies.

Four Ways to Plan the Last Day

1. Straight to the airport

The simplest plan. The chauffeur collects you at the hotel at the agreed time, and you travel directly to the terminal. Best for daytime flights and for travellers who want the last hours in Makkah, not in a car.

2. A last day in Jeddah before a late flight

Many flights home leave Jeddah late in the evening or after midnight. Rather than sitting in a hotel lobby after check out, travel to Jeddah in the afternoon, spend the evening in Historic Jeddah or on the corniche, and go to the airport from there. Our guide to visiting Al Balad with a chauffeur shows how an evening in the old town works with a car that waits nearby. Booked as a full day, the same car and chauffeur stay with you from Makkah check out to the airport, and the luggage stays in the vehicle all day.

3. A family or group departing together

When several families leave on the same flight, one larger vehicle is usually calmer and often cheaper per person than several small ones. A Staria or a Hiace carries a group and its luggage together, so nobody waits at the terminal for the second car. See our guide to choosing a vehicle for an Umrah group.

4. Elderly travellers and wheelchairs

For older parents the departure is often more tiring than the arrival, after days of walking. Ask for a vehicle with an easy step height, tell us about any wheelchair so it travels in the same car, and allow extra time at the terminal for assistance. Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents covers this in more depth.

Chauffeur, Taxi, Ride Hailing or the Haramain Train?

The Haramain high speed railway links Makkah with an airport station at King Abdulaziz International and is an excellent option for one or two travellers with light bags. The honest arithmetic is the same as on arrival: you still need a car from the hotel to Makkah station, a departure that suits your flight, and a walk with your luggage from the airport station to your terminal.

A street taxi or ride hailing app works for a small party in daylight. The weak points are the ones that matter most on a departure day: a driver who cancels, a car that turns out too small for the luggage, and a fare that rises when demand is high.

A pre booked chauffeur removes those decisions. The vehicle is sized to the group and the bags, the collection time is agreed the day before, the price is fixed in writing, and the chauffeur has your flight number and terminal. Our Makkah taxi versus chauffeur guide sets out the cost comparison in detail.

What It Costs

Makkah is a holy city route, so the Makkah to Jeddah airport transfer is quoted per route rather than from a fixed table. Send us the hotel, the flight number, the number of passengers and the number of bags, and we return an exact figure in writing before you travel. That figure is the one you pay.

If you plan a last day in Jeddah before a late flight, the published Jeddah full day rates below are the reference point for that part of the day. Every figure is on our pricing page.

How the Collection Works

  1. The day before: send your hotel, flight number, departure time, passengers and bags to +966 56 644 0190 or info@roarkchauffeur.com. We confirm the collection time, the vehicle and the price in writing.
  2. The evening before: you receive the chauffeur's name and number.
  3. On the day: the chauffeur checks the flight status and terminal before setting off, arrives at the hotel ahead of the agreed time and waits at the entrance you choose.
  4. At the terminal: you are dropped at the departures entrance for your airline, with the luggage unloaded beside you.

If your flight is retimed, tell us as soon as you know and we move the collection. The same applies if you are travelling on to Madinah instead: our Makkah chauffeur service covers the onward road as well as the airport.

Planning Tips

Book the return when you book the arrival. It is one message, and it means the departure is settled before the trip begins.

Count the bags again the night before. If the number has grown, tell us so the vehicle can change.

Keep passports and tickets in a hand bag. Not in a case that goes into the boot first.

Plan around the prayers. Leaving the Haram district straight after a congregational prayer is the slowest start to any departure.

Check the flight on the morning. Schedules across the region are still being adjusted, and a retimed flight is easier to handle at breakfast than at the kerb.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the airline, and several foreign airlines have changed terminal this autumn. Check your airline's website or app the day before, and give your chauffeur the flight number so the terminal can be confirmed on the morning.

Can I take Zamzam water on the flight home?

That depends on your airline, which sets the rules on packing, quantity and allowance. Check its policy before you buy. The chauffeur will carry and load the containers with the rest of your luggage.
