Chauffeur by the Month: When a Long Term Driver Beats Booking Trip by Trip

A monthly chauffeur arrangement places one vetted driver and one vehicle with your organisation for a fixed period instead of billing every journey separately. At the published Riyadh full day rate of SAR 1,150, twenty two working days would total SAR 25,300. Monthly arrangements are quoted per period rather than carded.

Almost everything written about chauffeur services in Saudi Arabia assumes you are buying a journey. A transfer from the airport. A twelve hour day. A block of hours. Our own published pricing page is built on exactly that assumption, and for most customers it is the right one.

There is a different way of buying that almost nobody asks about, and the people who need it most are usually the ones paying the most for not knowing it exists. It is the monthly arrangement: one driver, one vehicle, placed with you for a period rather than a trip.

This guide explains what that actually means, what it does to the arithmetic, and the four situations where it wins. It also has a section explaining when you should not do it, because for a large majority of customers a monthly arrangement is the wrong answer and we would rather say so here than discover it three weeks in.

What a monthly arrangement is, and what it is not

A monthly chauffeur arrangement means a named driver and an assigned vehicle are committed to you for the period. You are not calling a dispatcher and taking whoever is free. The same person collects your chief executive on Tuesday morning as collected them on Sunday, knows which entrance the office uses, knows the security procedure at the site in Dhahran, and knows that the four o'clock meeting always runs over.

It is not a car rental with a driver bolted on. In a rental arrangement the vehicle is the product and the driver is an accessory, and the responsibility for licensing, insurance, hours and conduct sits in an uncomfortable place between the rental company, the driver and you. We wrote about that distinction at length in our guide to a car with driver against self drive, and it matters more, not less, over a month.

It is also not an employment relationship. You are not sponsoring anybody, you are not managing anybody's residency status, you are not liable for their end of service entitlement, and you are not the party responsible if they are unwell on a Wednesday. The vehicle, the licensing, the insurance, the professional driver card and the replacement driver are all our problem. That is the entire point of the structure.

The arithmetic, starting from what we publish

There is no published monthly rate on our card, and we will explain why further down. What we can do honestly is show you what the published day rate costs across a month, because that is the number a monthly arrangement has to beat before it is worth anybody's time.

The Saudi working week runs Sunday to Thursday, which is roughly twenty two working days in a typical month. Every figure in the left column below is published on our pricing page. The right column is simply that figure multiplied by twenty two, shown so you can check the arithmetic yourself.

Those right hand numbers are not quotes. They are the published card, multiplied out, and they exist to give you a ceiling. If somebody offers you a monthly arrangement that costs more than the day rate multiplied by the days you actually need, the arrangement is not saving you anything and you should book days instead. Our full day service page covers what a twelve hour day includes.

Why there is no published monthly rate

We publish transfer and day rates because those products are the same for everybody. A twelve hour day in Riyadh on a Fortuner is a twelve hour day in Riyadh on a Fortuner, whoever books it.

A month is not like that, and the variables are large enough that any published figure would be wrong for most people who read it. Five things move the number substantially.

The hours. A driver who works a standard business day is a different commitment from one who starts at five in the morning for site visits and finishes after a client dinner. The published extra hour rates in the tables above are the honest reference point for what hours beyond the standard day are worth.

The days. Sunday to Thursday is one arrangement. Six days is another. Seven days with a rest rotation is a third, and it is not one driver at all, it is two.

The geography. A month spent inside Riyadh is a different cost base from a month that includes weekly runs to Qassim or the Eastern Province. Intercity work is quoted per route on our card and it stays quoted per route inside a monthly arrangement.

The vehicle. The tables above show the range clearly. A Fortuner and an S Class are not the same product and the monthly gap between them is larger than the daily gap, because it compounds.

The length. One month, three months and twelve months are genuinely different commitments for us, and pretending otherwise on a public page would be dishonest in one direction or the other.

So the answer is that monthly arrangements are quoted per period. Tell us the hours, the days, the cities, the vehicle and the length, and you get a figure. You can start that conversation on our contact page or on +966 56 644 0190.

The four situations where a month genuinely wins

1. A senior executive who is in the Kingdom permanently

This is the clearest case and it is mostly not about money. A country manager or a regional director moving through Riyadh every working day accumulates journeys that nobody counts: the office, the ministry, the partner meeting, the airport twice a fortnight, the dinner that was not in the diary. Buying those individually is administratively heavy and the total surprises people at the end of the quarter.

The reason to do it monthly, though, is continuity. A driver who has been with the same principal for six weeks anticipates. They know that the meeting in the King Abdullah Financial District needs an extra twenty minutes at four o'clock and that the one in Olaya does not. Our corporate transport service is built around exactly this pattern.

2. A project team on site for a defined period

Engineering, audit, construction and consulting teams arrive for six weeks, twelve weeks or a season. They travel together, they travel at unsociable hours, and they go to places that are difficult to reach and difficult to leave. An eleven seat Hyundai H1 or Toyota Hiace on a monthly arrangement is one of the most efficient things a project manager can put in place, and the alternative, which is several people driving hire cars after a fourteen hour day on a site, is worse in every way that matters.

3. A family with a settled routine

School runs, clinic appointments, the office, the weekly shop, the airport when relatives visit. This is high frequency, low glamour, entirely predictable movement, and it is the pattern that suffers most from booking trip by trip, because every single journey requires a decision. A monthly arrangement removes the decisions.

It is also the case where the driver being the same person matters most, particularly where children are travelling. You are not introducing a stranger to your household every week.

4. An event or delegation running longer than a few days

Riyadh's autumn is dense with multi day exhibitions and conferences, and the venues at Malham and Riyadh Front sit well outside the central hotel belt. A delegation attending a four day exhibition is not making four airport transfers, it is making a shuttle movement every morning and every evening plus everything in between. That shape is closer to a monthly arrangement than to a transfer, and we cover it under event transportation and group transport.

When you genuinely do not need this

We publish this section on most of our guides because it is the fastest way to be useful, and it costs us bookings on purpose.

You are visiting for under two weeks. Book days or transfers. A month you do not use is the most expensive product on this page. Our guide on transfers against full day hire in Riyadh covers where that line falls.

Your movement is genuinely occasional. If you make three or four journeys a week and they are short, a monthly arrangement is paying for a great deal of standing time. Look at hourly chauffeur hire instead, which exists for precisely this.

Your requirement is airport transfers and nothing else. If the pattern is one arrival and one departure a fortnight, that is what airport transfers are for and the published rate is the honest price.

Your schedule is genuinely unpredictable across cities. If you are in Jeddah one week, Dammam the next and Riyadh the third, a single assigned vehicle is fighting your itinerary rather than serving it. Day hire in each city plus intercity quoted per route usually costs less and works better.

What changes operationally over a month

Three things are different once the same driver is with you for a period, and they are the reasons that survive after the arithmetic.

Anticipation replaces instruction. In week one you explain where you are going. By week four the vehicle is already positioned. That difference is worth more to a busy principal than most people expect, because it removes a small negotiation from every journey.

Discretion becomes real rather than promised. Confidential conversations happen in cars. Over a month, one driver hears them instead of fifteen, and that is a meaningfully smaller surface. For legal, financial and government facing work this is often the reason the arrangement is chosen at all.

Standards become measurable. With a rotating pool you get an average. With one assigned driver you get a person whose punctuality, vehicle condition and manner you can actually assess, and if the fit is wrong we change the driver rather than asking you to tolerate it.

The Saudi specifics that matter

Two regulatory points are worth stating plainly, because they are the difference between a professional arrangement and an informal one that looks cheaper on a spreadsheet.

First, commercial passenger transport in the Kingdom is regulated by the Transport General Authority, and drivers working in the regulated passenger categories, limousine services included, require a professional driver card. The compliance deadline for correcting land transport establishment status and completing driver card requirements is 27 August 2026. If somebody is offering you a monthly driver noticeably below the market, the sensible first question is whether that driver is carded.

Second, an informal private driver arrangement usually puts the sponsorship, the residency compliance, the insurance position and the end of service liability on you, and most of the people entering into these arrangements do not realise that until something goes wrong. A commercial arrangement with a licensed operator leaves all of it with the operator. That is not a marketing line, it is the substantive legal difference between the two structures.

Choosing the vehicle for a month rather than a day

Vehicle choice changes when the horizon is a month, and it usually changes in the direction of practicality.

For a single principal doing city work, the sedan and luxury sedan classes are the sensible default. The published Riyadh day rates of SAR 1,380 and SAR 1,495 are the reference. The first class vehicles, the S Class and the BMW 7 Series, are appropriate where the vehicle is part of the impression being made, and the tables above show what that costs over twenty two days rather than one.

For anybody with luggage, family or Saudi road variety in the plan, the SUV classes earn their place, and the Fortuner at a published SAR 1,150 in Riyadh is the most economical serious vehicle on the card.

For teams, the eleven seat vans are almost always the right answer, and the Coaster at twenty one seats covers the larger project group. Browse the full range on the fleet page.

One practical note. Over a month, seats you do not use every day are cheap insurance. The gap between the H1 at SAR 1,610 and the Fortuner at SAR 1,150 in Riyadh is SAR 460 a day, but the H1 seats eleven and the Fortuner seats six, and a team that occasionally becomes eight people is far better served by the van.

How to raise it at enquiry

Tell us five things and you will get a figure rather than a conversation: how many hours a day, which days of the week, which cities, which vehicle class, and how long the arrangement runs. If you are not sure about the vehicle, describe the passengers and the luggage and we will tell you.

If a monthly arrangement is not right for you, we will say so and point you at the published card instead. We would rather do that than sell a month that sits idle, because the customer who feels sold to does not come back and the customer who was told the truth usually does.

Roark operates across Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam with published rates, and across the wider Kingdom and the GCC quoted per route. Start on the contact page, on +966 56 644 0190, or read the Riyadh service page for what we cover in the capital.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a monthly chauffeur cost in Saudi Arabia?

There is no published monthly rate because the hours, days, cities, vehicle and length all move the figure substantially. What is published is the day rate, and multiplying it out gives you a ceiling. In Riyadh a Toyota Fortuner day is SAR 1,150, so twenty two days at the published rate would be SAR 25,300. A Mercedes S Class day is SAR 4,370, so the same month would be SAR 96,140. Monthly arrangements are quoted per period against those references.

Is a monthly chauffeur cheaper than booking day by day?

It should be, otherwise there is no reason to do it, but only if you actually use the days. The test is simple. Count the days you will genuinely need in a month, multiply by the published day rate for your vehicle, and compare. If your real usage is eight days rather than twenty two, day hire almost certainly wins and we will tell you so.

Do I get the same driver every day?

Yes, that is the point of the arrangement. A named driver is assigned to you for the period. Cover is arranged by us for leave and illness, and if the fit is not right we change the driver rather than asking you to work around it.

What happens if I need the car outside the agreed hours?

Additional hours are the normal case rather than an exception, and they are billed against the published extra hour rate for your vehicle class. In Riyadh that runs from SAR 105 on a Toyota Fortuner to SAR 405 on a Mercedes S Class. Every extra hour rate is on the pricing page so there is nothing to discover later.

Can a monthly arrangement include trips to other cities?

Yes, and it is common, but intercity work is quoted per route rather than absorbed into the monthly figure. Riyadh to Qassim, Jeddah to Makkah and the Dammam to Bahrain crossing are all separate quotes. The causeway crossing in particular is an international border with documentation requirements for the vehicle and the driver, so it must be raised at enquiry and never on the day.

Am I employing the driver?

No. The driver is employed by us. Licensing, the professional driver card, insurance, vehicle maintenance, replacement cover and end of service liability all sit with Roark. That is the substantive difference between a commercial monthly arrangement and an informal private driver, and it is usually the reason organisations choose the former.
